UEW HOLDS 16TH CONGREGATION

The President of the Republic of Ghana, Prof John Evans Atta Mills has called for the reorientation of tertiary education to provide the knowledge base that would foster economic development. This, he said requires improvement in the relevance of content of the curricula of tertiary education institutions and improvement in the technologies employed in the teaching and learning process.

This was contained in a speech read on his behalf by the Minister of Education, Mrs. Betty Mould Iddrisu at the 16th Congregation of the University of Education, Winneba during whicha total of 18, 531 students pursing various degrees and diplomas graduated on November 18, 2011 in Winneba.

Government, he said is committed to collaborating with stakeholders to finding solutions to challenges facing tertiary institutions such as funding, limited access, equity, quality, relevance, programme diversity and research.

According to him, government is investing so much in education with reference to the increase in Capitation Grants, provision of free school uniforms, exercise books and textbooks, as well as physical and academic infrastructural projects on various campuses.


Cola Foundation to contribute to the Development of UEW

Azad-Natalya-ColaThe Cola Foundation a not-for-profit organisation aims to make a significant contribution to the sustainable development of the University of Education Winneba, Ghana through a staff exchange program. The foundation sponsored by Azad Cola, a London Hotelier aim to improve on the quality of Education delivery in the University of Education, Winneba.

 Azad Cola a friend of the Chancellor, Alhaji (Dr.) Asoma Abu Banda, visited the University of Education, Winneba during the Investiture of the Chancellor. Inspired by the university's efforts to improve on the quality of Education in the wake of inadequate and insufficient teaching learning resources. The foundation is set up to develop exchange links between the University of Education, Winneba and British Universities as well as promote links with different departments in UEW.

The main mission of the exchange programme is to:

Six lecturers at the Institute for Educational Development and Extension (IEDE) of UEW and their group coordinator visited the United Kingdom from October 15 to 23, 2011 in line with a project titled “Mentoring and Action Research in Teacher Education in Ghana: Developing Good Practice at the University of Education, Winneba”.

DSC03753Speaking on meeting the national challenges at the 16th congregation of the University of Education, Winneba, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, appealed to government to resource teacher training institutions, esp. the University of Education, Winneba to enable them to produce well informed and resourceful teachers to lead the agenda of national development. 

This position he noted is non-negotiable because the Ghanaian child has the constitutional right to basic education. He stressed that the provision of basic education goes beyond the provision of free meals and free uniforms to school going Ghanaians; and a learning environment of the child conducive to teaching and learning. Our children will need to be provided teachers and relevant and adequate teaching/learning materials even if they are aggregated under trees he emphasized.
